Mother and child with healthy smiles in summer.

Summer has a way of changing schedules, sleep habits, mealtimes, and yes, even dental routines. For families, the relaxed pace of the season can make it easy to let healthy habits slide. Unfortunately, even a few months of inconsistency can have real consequences for your oral health.

Why Summer Disrupts Oral Health

Kids stay up later. People travel more. Families eat on the go, snack more freely, and spend less time at home. All of that adds up quickly when it comes to oral health.

Add in sugary summer treats like popsicles, lemonade, sports drinks, and ice cream, and it’s a perfect store for tooth decay.

The good news is that staying on track does not have to be complicated. A few simple adjustments can help you protect your smile all summer long.

Keeping Kids on Track

Summer camps, playdates, and vacations make it harder to supervise kids’ routines. Brushing twice a day and flossing once a day should stay non-negotiable, even when everything else is relaxed.

A few strategies that help:

  • Keep dental supplies visible and accessible. A toothbrush and toothpaste sitting out on the counter is a better reminder than one tucked away in a bag.
  • Build brushing into anchor points in the day. Brushing first thing in the morning and right before bed can become just as consistent as they are during the school year, even with a flexible summer schedule.
  • Watch the snacks. Offer water, fresh fruit, and crunchy vegetables alongside summer treats. Rinsing with water after sugary snacks helps reduce acid exposure between brushing.

If your child plays summer sports, make sure they have a properly fitted mouthguard. Dental injuries from sports are among the most preventable, and a mouthguard is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect teeth during physical activity.

Tips for Traveling This Summer

Travel is one of the biggest disruptors of dental routines. When you pack your bags and head out, it is easy to forget supplies, fall asleep without brushing, or go longer than usual between flossing.

Before your trip:

  • Pack a travel toothbrush, floss, and travel-sized toothpaste in your carry-on or day bag so they stay with you rather than ending up buried in checked luggage.
  • Unpack your toothbrush as soon as you reach your destination, especially if you packed it up while it was still damp from use, so that it can dry out to discourage bacterial growth.
  • Set a phone reminder to brush if your schedule is likely to be unpredictable.
  • Choose water as your primary drink when sightseeing or on the road. It keeps you hydrated, supports saliva production, and helps rinse away food and acid throughout the day.

When dining out frequently, try to avoid letting sugary drinks replace water as your default. Coffee, soda, and sweet cocktails throughout the day without adequate water in between can take a toll on enamel over time.

Schedule a Summer Dental Checkup

One of the best things you can do for your family’s oral health this summer is to schedule a checkup, either before the busy season hits or during it. A professional cleaning removes buildup that daily brushing cannot address, and an exam can catch small problems before they become bigger ones.

Summer is also a convenient time to bring kids in, since school schedules are not a barrier. If it has been more than six months since your last visit, now is a good time to get back on track.
