Getting Invested in Preventive Dentistry
“Preventive dentistry” is the practice of preventing dental problems before they arise. This may sound tricky, but it’s rooted in good oral care practices. Excellent oral hygiene and regular dental visits are the most important steps. Details on those practices and a few others are below; all will contribute to your preventive dental efforts.
- Proper brushing and flossing – “Proper” brushing and flossing may be different from what you’ve been doing. Check out a brushing guide and a flossing guide, and ask us for tips on your technique at your next dental exam.
- Regular dental exams – The interval appropriate for regular exams is different for many patients. Depending on your risk of decay, periodontal health, and age, we may want to see you and take x-rays more or less often. Check with Dr. Baudean to see what’s right for you.
- Well balanced diet – A healthy diet will provide your teeth with the calcium, minerals, and nutrients they need to not only build strong enamel but remain hardy for years to come. A diet low in sugary and starchy foods will also give rise to less bacteria and acid, preventing decay.
- Spotting teeth grinding – If you’re waking up poorly rested, with sore teeth and a fatigued jaw, you’re likely grinding your teeth. This not only wears down your enamel, but also puts them at risk of breaking.
- Rinsing after eating – Many people aren’t able to brush and floss after eating, but everyone should have a moment to rinse with water. This will remove external stains, and help wash away food particles that may give rise to bacteria.
